About Dr. Jane

Dr. Jane L. Mahakian, Ph.D.

Dr. Jane is a gerontologist and author who has worked and advocated for 30 years in the “realm of forgetfulness.” She specializes in helping adults (and their families) with cognitive impairment, caused primarily by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Prior to founding Aging Matters in 1998, she directed the UC San Francisco Elder Care Referral Program for more than ten years. Dr. Jane developed the innovative initiative to provide resources and other information for UCSF faculty, staff, and students dealing with elder care challenges. Dr. Jane also served as a visiting research associate with the San Francisco Institute on Aging.

 

Dr. Jane holds a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Berkeley. She completed her clinical training at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Centers (VAMC):  a two-year pre-doctoral internship at the VAMC in Martinez, California, and a one-year post-doctoral internship at the VAMC in San Francisco. Dr. Jane is also licensed as a Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT30045).  Since 2001, she has been a certified member of the Aging Life Care Association. In 2017, Dr. Jane founded Alzheimer's Care Armenia, Inc.
